Located in the libournais, northeast of Bordeaux, the appellation has an area of 785 hectares, for 138 properties. Pomerol is discreet, confidential, each property seeks to stand out from its neighbors.

On the surface, the soil is mainly composed of more or less compact gravel, clay and sand. The basement is made of iron (or iron oxide) which gives the wines their unique identity.

The grape varieties allowed in the appellation are merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, and the distribution is as follows: 80% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 5% sauvignon.
